Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Program at W.J.Mouat Secondary currently focuses on the student’s technical skills, critical thinking with an emphasis on the idea and concept development in a variety of media.

Courses are offered in, drawing and painting, ceramics, film photography, digital photography and graphic design. Mouat also has a special after school art program for the visually gifted and talented student.

Students in their senior years are encouraged to develop a portfolio as a record of production,and to use in applications to art schools and universities. Students will also have opportunity to visit our local gallery the “Reach” throughout the year.

Art 9 (AR9)
A foundation course in which a variety of media is used. Students will explore drawing, painting, mixed media, clay and design. Emphasis will be placed in using the elements of design to create original imagery. Some discussion of art in history and contemporary times will be included.

Visual Arts 10: Drawing & Painting (VAD10) Fine Arts
Extension of Art 9, emphasizing experimentation with a variety of materials in drawing, painting and some printmaking. Students will be expected to develop in- depth understanding of processes, materials and the use of elements and principles of design in their own art, as well as historical and contemporary art. Specific art assignments related to these processes and the elements and principals of design will be given so students can gain more practice using a variety of materials to develop personal imagery. Students will analyze and evaluate image development strategies used by themselves, their peers and other artists.

Visual Arts: General 10 Extended Day (VAG10) Fine Arts
This course has been designed for students who have a passion for Art & Design. VAG10 is an extended day class which takes place after school on Mon. & Tues. from 2:30-4:00 for the school year. Students will be mainly painting in an open studio environment. VAG10 does not take the place of a regular Art class.

Art Foundations 11 Extended Day (AF11) Fine Arts
Students must have instructor's permission and a 'A' average to enroll.
An extended day class where all classes take place after school Mon. & Tues. from 2:30-4:00 for the school year. This course has been designed for students who have a passion for art & design. Students will be mainly painting in an open studio environment. AF11 does not take the place of a regular art class.

Digital Photography & Graphic Design 11 (VAMT11) Fine Arts
Designed for all levels of photographers.
All students must bring to class a basic point and shoot digital camera with SD cards. If possible an entry level entry DSLR would even be better. I have a preference for Canon or Nikon cameras but any digital camera would be acceptable. This course will help students become well rounded in the fundamentals of digital photography. Students will learn: basic composition, some studio lighting, the use of Adobe Photoshop CS as applied to photography and time permitting Lightroom. Students will be permitted to go outside and shoot assignments based on what they are learning. Students will also be required to take pictures on their own time. Students will be shown samples of desired outcomes at the beginning of each assignment. The class will critique all work.

Photography 11 (YVPA 11A)
Students must provide their own 35mm manual camera with built-in light meter. This is an introductory level photography course. Students will learn to use a 35mm camera, process black and white film, print enlargements, use an enlarger, tone and hand-tint photographs, safety procedures for mixing and using photographic chemicals, creative approaches to image making and pinhole photography. Time permitting, students will explore Photoshop to enhance or alter images.

Studio Arts 11: Ceramics & Sculpture (SACS11) Fine Arts
Work on more advanced projects using hand building and casting techniques. Projects will be assigned and used to encourage creative and original problem-solving. Students are expected to plan and design projects before creating and decorating them. Class discussion, participation and critiques of art are encouraged. Some discussion of historical and contemporary art will be included as well.

Studio Arts 11: Drawing and Painting (SADP 11) Fine Arts
Prerequisite: Art 9 or 10 with C+ min.
Designed for those students who wish to continue specializing in these visual expression areas. Students will be expected to work in a studio format and to develop and build on previous course work. They will also be expected to develop and build a personal approach to imagery. Students will maintain a sketchbook and a folio of finished works. Assignments in graphite, acrylic, conte crayon, charcoal, etc. will be given. Students will be required to develop critical judgments concerning art. Historical and contemporary aspects of drawing and painting will be considered and researched. Grade 12 students will be expected to show increased mastery in compositional and expressive skills in drawing and painting. Students will be required to supply their own pencil sets, acrylic flat paint brushes, prism color pencil crayons, white and kneaded erasers and 9"x12" sketch book (white paper).

Art Foundations 12 Extended Day (AF12) Fine Arts
This course has been designed for students who have a passion for Art & Design. AF12 is an extended day class which takes place after school on Mon. & Tues. from 2:30-4:00 for the school year. Students will be mainly painting in an open studio environment. AF12 does not take the place of a regular Art class.

Digital Photography & Graphic Design 12 (VAMT12) Fine Arts
Prerequisite: Students must have completed Digital Photography 11 before enrolling in Digital Photography 12.
Students will explore the elements of art, principles of design, and composition while exploring the genres of landscapes, architecture, still life, portraits etc. All students must bring a digital camera to class each period, preferably a DSLR digital camera.

Studio Arts 12: Ceramics & Sculpture (SACS12) Fine Arts
A continuation of Studio Arts 11: Ceramics & Sculpture. Students will be expected to work at a more advanced level in hand building & casting techniques. Projects will be self-initiated as well as teacher-initiated. Students will answer problem-solving assignments in the creation, design and completion of functional and decorative 3- dimensional work. Students must also participate in class discussion, analysis & critiques of 3-dimensional art in historical, contemporary & personal images. All projects will be either glazed, stained, patina finished, or rust finished etc. Students will also learn plaster casting techniques & latex casting and how these can be used to create multiple forms.
